The PHAMIT Project 
 
The Prevention of HIV/AIDS Among Migrant Workers in Thailand Project (PHAMIT), funded by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM), is a collaborative project of eight NGOs: Raks Thai Foundation (the Principal Recipient) , Center for AIDS Rights (CAR), World Vision Foundation of Thailand, PATH, Stella Maris Center, MAP Foundation, Empower (Chiang Mai), and Pattanarak Foundation. PHAMIT partners are working in over twenty provinces throughout Thailand in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health and local health providers, to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS and to improve the quality of life among migrant workers, their families and sex workers.  
  
The Goal of the PHAMIT Project is to reduce the number of new HIV infections among migrant workers in Thailand and contribute towards the reduction of HIV/AIDS in the countries of Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar.  
 
 

PHAMIT Objectives  
1. Increase condom use and reproductive health practices among migrant workers and related populations.  
2. Make the health system favorable for migrant workers to receive suitable health prevention and treatment services. 
3. Assist in the development of a supportive psychosocial environment and community strengthening for migrant workers and their families.  
4. Promote a political environment at the national and inter-country level that supports migrant workers’ right to health and treatment. 

Intended Results  
 
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS prevention is increased among migrant workers and related populations
  • Accessibility of condoms is increased at migrants’ workplaces and related entertainment establishments
  • STI treatment services are made available near migrants’ workplaces
  • Access to reproductive health and family planning services for migrant women is increased
  • Hospitals and health centers increase provision of services to migrant workers and their families
  • Employers support the provision of HIV/AIDS/STI prevention and services to migrant workers
  • Children of migrant workers have greater access to education
  • Migrant communities participate in social and cultural activities, and develop linkages with related communities
  • Migrant workers are aware of their rights and responsibilities while in Thailand
  • Governments implement policies favorable to migrants
  
         

The PHAMIT Strategy  
 
The PHAMIT project intends to not only increase targeted HIV prevention efforts for migrants working and living in Thailand, but also to support the development of health systems, social supports, and related policies in order to enable migrant workers and related populations to improve their quality of life while in Thailand.
